Sunlight in a lane of Pahargang, New Delhi, India

by Jerome Lorieau

Man in the lane of Pahargang, New Delhi (Jerome Lorieau)

In the morning, a man is walking and smoking in the lane of Pahargang.

About the photograph:
I was having an after breakfast wander in Pahargang when the light on the wall above caught my attention. It was early in the morning, the sun was slowly rising and the lane was still dark. I really liked the contrast of the whole scene but there was not much interest for a photograph. Some people walked by and I then noticed that the face of some of them were lit by the same ray of light. At this moment, I organised my composition and waited for the right pedestrian. It was quite difficult because the person needed to walk into the light, be tall enough but not too tall and have an interesting expression on his face. Luckily, I didn’t have to wait too long.
Pahargang is the main touristic area in Delhi. A busy place surrounded by shops, markets, bars & restaurants, hotels & cheap guesthouses where all sorts of foreigners mix with each other and Indian people.

About

Expressing myself between documentary and street photography, my work focus on long term projects because of the human aspect, but also to have better insight and understanding of a situation over time. Photography is a medium that allows me to explore the cultural and sociological aspects of life in order to understand the relationship between the people, their traditions/habits/cultures and their environment. In recent years I have worked on separate long term projects about the Medinas of Morocco and more recently the Yamuna river in India.
