Street Photography Workshop & Course in Paris

Following the path of the French Humanists (Version FR)

It was in Paris that the Golden age of French Humanist photography took place, with photographers such as René Jacques, Jean Dieuzaide, Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis and Henry Cartier Bresson. All French photographers interested in street photography have in some way been influenced by the French humanists. Their photographs are real gems, and are a part of French history, documenting the everyday life of French people during the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and later.
Nowadays, Paris is still one of those cities where time seems to have stopped thanks to its wonderful architecture, historical monuments and well designed parks. You can still feel this unique French atmosphere when wandering its streets, and food and flee markets, and the Seine river bank where Parisians come to relax in the Summertime. Observing life in the French capital is endless, as are the opportunities to shoot moments of life. Paris is still a city with a big photographic culture and a great city for street photography. A photographic culture that has changed a lot thanks to the influence of American photographers such as Joel Meyerowitz, Garry Winogrand, William Eggleston and with a different approach, Alex Webb. While we will get inspiration from humanist culture, we will also approach this workshop/tuition with a more contemporary culture of street photography.

Photo Course Goals – One to One & Groups

The focus of this workshop is to enhance your photographic culture and improve your approach to street photography while perfecting your composition through learning how to balance forms and elements in a frame and capture movement. This street photography workshop in Paris aims to help you understand how to create strong visuals and how to take stronger content. It also focuses on improving your sense of observation, anticipating and identifying moments of life, and getting closer to your subject. These points will be worked through themes/assignments during the day.

  • Introduction & Theory – Talk about some of my photographs

I will start the street photography workshop by talking about a selection of my photographs and my approach to photography through studying some of my photographs. The point of this is that I will be able to give you a full explanation about the context and creative process of some of my photographs from the start to the end. I will also show a selection of some of my contact sheets in order to demonstrate both the process of taking a photograph and editing it.

  • Improve your composition, learn to create strong visuals

As part of the introduction and theory, we will also study composition. It is an important part of creating a photograph. A good composition influences the quality of your image in the same way that strong content strengthens a photograph. During the street photography course in Paris, I will teach you, through basic composition rules, how to balance forms (from the foreground to the background) in order to create simple photo compositions and more complex ones.

  • Get recommendations and tips

Thanks to individual or group tuition (up to three participants), I will be able to give you advice and individual attention as well as being available to answer your questions. Thanks to a small number of participants, each participant will be able to progress quickly in a friendly environment.

  • Photo walk

Immerse yourself in known and less travelled street of Paris and train your eyes and your sense of observation to document its street life and culture.

  • Photo review

This is a very important part of the street photography workshop. At the end of the day, I will spend some time with you assessing and constructively criticising your work while giving you some advice, tips and recommendations on how to improve your photographs. The review is often an opportunity for interesting conversation about street photography and its culture.

Who can attend the street photography workshop?

This workshop is for photographers who have a keen interest in street photography and who want to progress in this field. The goal is that each photographer will also develop his or her own vision of the world while enjoying the city of Paris and Parisian life.
